The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
