An Prediction Market Participant Made $436K from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Market Movement in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
Yet the odds had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said an industry expert.
Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Emerges
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
